Expansion of the Northern Coffee Areal
Facilitate the expansion of coffee plantations by introducing new farming methods and supporting farmers in land preparation and cultivation.
Investment in tools for farmers
Investment in tools for farmers to maintain coffee fields is required to enhance productivity and quality.
Local Context and Sustainability
- Organic, shade-grown coffee production is ideal for small farmers in the highlands of Laos.
- Coffee arabica thrives in cooler climates, and shade-grown methods enhance soil quality without the need for chemical fertilizers.
- Project mitigates risks of crop failure or market fluctuations by diversifying crops and absorbing extra labor through family participation.
Achievements
- Procured necessary equipment such as brush cutters and hand tools for farm maintenance.
- Successfully trained and deployed a field team to operate independently.
- Increased compost production to improve soil conditions.
- Initiated partnerships with farmers in Dak Chung, South Laos, to expand the project model and increase coffee production.
Upcoming Initiatives:
- Implementation of soil testing and improvement measures to address soil erosion and productivity issues.
- Collaboration with local farmers in Dak Chung to establish a cooperative and improve farming practices.
- Utilization of the DGGF pre-finance option to export coffee beans to Europe, ensuring market access and fair trade practices.
Recognition and Support
- UPLAO's efforts have garnered recognition from national governments, with involvement in central government programs aimed at strengthening the coffee sector in northern Laos.
- Strong support from local departments in districts where UPLAO is active underscores the project's alignment with national development priorities.
