Objectives Achieved
Community Engagement
The heart of this project lies in community involvement. Villagers are actively contributing their time, resources, and expertise to ensure the success and sustainability of this initiative.
Enhanced Livelihood Resilience
Diversification of the rural economy by introducing high-value intercrops, such as plum, macadamia, and avocado, alongside coffee cultivation, enhanced livelihood resilience. Farmers were provided with sustainable alternatives to non-sustainable cropping systems, promoting soil improvement and preservation techniques.
Provided Alternatives for Unsustainable Practices
By training farmers in sustainable agricultural techniques, the project provided alternatives for unsustainable practices like shifting cultivation and short-term intensive cash cropping. Soil enhancement and preservation techniques were emphasized, contributing to long-term environmental sustainability.
Implementation Approach
The project adopted a bottom-up approach, prioritizing the needs of the village community and offering sustainable solutions aligned with socio-economic and environmental conditions. Agroforestry plantations were expanded, and high-value perennial crops were introduced, creating sustainable livelihoods for upland communities.
Key Achievements
- Establishment of 16 hectares agroforestry coffee plantations combined with high-value intercrops.
- Training workshops conducted on sustainable agricultural techniques, soil improvement, and preservation.
- Capacity building for farmer organizations and value chain development.
- Successful setup of processing facilities and certification processes
- Marketing initiatives promoting Northern Lao coffee and enhancing market access.
