Social Economic Development of Namvang

Social Economic Development of Namvang through Organic Coffee Production Project

The project, initiated by the Provincial Agriculture and Forestry Office of Luang Namtha, in collaboration with Viengphouka District Agriculture and Forestry Office (DAFO), UPLAO Agricultural Promotion Company, and Namvang village farmers, aimed to address agricultural challenges prevalent in the uplands of Namtha province, Laos. With a focus on enhancing organic coffee production, diversifying the rural economy, and capacity building, the project sought to provide sustainable alternatives to slash-and-burn agriculture, monocropping, and opium production.

Objectives Achieved

Enhancement of Coffee Processing

The project professionalized the existing coffee processing site by improving infrastructure, including fencing, roofing, drainage, and storage facilities. These upgrades led to improved coffee processing, resulting in higher quality produce and better prices for farmers.

Diversification of Rural Economy

The introduction of fruit and nut trees in coffee fields diversified the local economy, providing shade for coffee trees and additional income opportunities for farmers. This diversification reduced dependency on monocropping and promoted sustainable agricultural practices.

Promotion of Organic Agriculture

Construction of a central composting facility and natural pest-control processing site promoted organic farming practices and reduced reliance on agrochemicals. These initiatives contributed to soil enhancement and environmental sustainability.

Capacity Building of Farmers

Purchase of essential tools and equipment, such as grass cutting machines, spraying devices, and pruning tools, enhanced the capacities of farmers for successful organic coffee cultivation. This investment alleviated work pressure and facilitated efficient farming practices.

Investments

A total project cost of $36,020 was allocated for setting up a processing facility, storage and office construction, a central composting area, purchase of machinery and tools, and procurement of fruit and nut trees.
